Thirty miles south, and honest about it

We do not have an office in Fort Lauderdale. Appsurd works from 2125 Biscayne Blvd in Miami, and that is the only address we have. If an agency ranking for this search claims a Las Olas suite, ask which floor and ask who sits there — a large share of those addresses are mail forwarding attached to a page that also exists for forty other cities.

What we do have is proximity that actually functions. Downtown Fort Lauderdale is about 30 miles up I-95 or the Turnpike, which is 35 minutes off-peak and closer to an hour if you insist on leaving at 5pm. Brightline runs Miami to Fort Lauderdale in roughly half an hour, station to station, which is how we usually do it when the meeting is downtown. Kickoffs, architecture arguments and the occasional hard conversation about scope are worth doing in a room, and we come to you for those.

Day to day, the work is remote and asynchronous, because a 48-hour delivery cadence depends on it. Standing meetings do not make software arrive faster. The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is the annual proof. The 2024 edition generated $1.78 billion in economic impact statewide, supported more than 10,000 full-time Florida jobs, moved $823.5 million in marine product sales during the show — $228.9 million of it from Broward County companies — and produced $25.3 million in state and local taxes inside Broward alone, according to an analysis by Thomas J. Murray & Associates reported by the South Florida Business Journal. For a lot of marine businesses here, the show is not a marketing event, it is the fiscal year. Software with a launch date that lands after the last weekend of October has, for practical purposes, missed twelve months.

Then there is Port Everglades, which is a different business from Miami's port in composition. In FY2025 the port reported roughly $48.3 billion in economic activity, nearly 300,000 jobs statewide, a record 4.7 million cruise guests and record cargo of 1.167 million TEUs. It is also the sole pipeline source of jet fuel for both Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood and Miami International. Almost every marine brief we take from this city contains the same unstated assumption: the app will have a network connection. It will not. A vessel leaves cell coverage a few miles out, satellite links are metered and slow, a yard technician loses signal inside a hull, and a crew member's phone is on a foreign SIM in a Bahamian anchorage. If the product falls over in any of those situations, it is not a marine product.

Offline-first is an architecture, not a feature flag. It means the device holds a real local database, every write is queued with a durable identity, and the UI never lies about whether something has been saved. It means conflict resolution is a designed behaviour — decided per data type, with a rule you can explain to a captain — rather than last-write-wins because nobody thought about it. It means the sync payload is small enough to move over a satellite link that charges by the megabyte, so you sync deltas and compress media rather than pushing full records and 12-megapixel photos.

It also means being deliberate about media. Maintenance and warranty work is photo-heavy, and photos are the fastest way to make an offline app unusable. We downsample on device, upload on a metered-connection policy the user controls, and keep the record valid whether or not the image has landed yet — because the alternative is a technician who stops using the app by week three.

Hardware and sensor integration is the other half. NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 data off the vessel network, Bluetooth sensors, tank and bilge monitoring, engine telemetry, access control at the dock, handheld scanners in a parts room. Bridging to that hardware is where React Native starts to struggle, and it is the main reason Fort Lauderdale briefs tip toward native Swift or Kotlin more often than our average project does. Four things move a Fort Lauderdale number more than anything else. What the first two weeks look like
